Tickets were bought in February, first to the train, then to the plane from San Francisco to Chicago. But I have a strange feeling in my gut that something should happen. I pictured an image of us stacked in the traffic while our train leaves the gate. We planned to leave Tundra in the airport long-term parking, then take a taxi to the railway station. But coming to the airport we found out that there is a light rail line here. So we bought tickets, sat in the train and waited. Apparently that train was broken so soon we went into another one. Anyway, we came to the Railroad Station around 1 pm and were sure that we have plenty of time. We found a place to eat and soon there was said something on a radio, but I wasn’t sure what – it wasn’t too loud and I’ve heard something named Zephyr – the name of our train – and the stops on it’s way. Just in case I went to ask Andrey, but he didn’t got that announcement either and we were sure that our train leaves at four. So soon after that we came to the gate D and after looking to the departure board I understood that we missed our train. We went to the help desk to see what options we have and decided to take a voucher that can be used anytime. I was a little bit disappointed that we were too careless and didn’t pay attention to the departure board sooner. But all the same, our plan to ride train then to fly back was too wonky.

Ira:
From the very beginning of our long vacation we were looking forward to two things: Legoland and our trip on the Amtrak. The Lego part wasn’t happening till August, but our train leaves today! After hurried packing, we loaded up our Tundra and set out for the airport. Where else are you supposed to find long-term parking? We left our car there, hoisted our loaded backpacks onto our shoulders, and headed to Terminal 3, from which a blue line train could take us to Union Station. We arrived at the station around 12, and started looking for a place to eat. The food was great, and we even got Starbucks after! As I was waiting in line with Mom and Kate, I heard a lady announce over a not-so-loud-speaker that a train for California was leaving at some gate. I panicked, thinking it was our train, and told Mom. She hurried off to tell Dad, but returned a bit later stating that our train leaves at four, not two. After that we walked around the station, asking about check-in and where the gate was. Then we made our way over to gate D, and setting down our backpacks breathed a sigh of relief. Those things are heavy! Soon enough Mom, who was off looking at something rushed over to us with a panicked expression, stating that we missed the train. We hurried to slip our packs back on, and spent twenty minutes looking for a way to switch our tickets. Didn’t find one. Although we were told that we’d be able to ride it in the spring or next summer, without extra charge. I was very dejected, for we were told about this trip from the very beginning, and I knew about the tickets since February. And then this happened.

Pavlik:
When we got to the airport, I took my backpack, tablet, charger, and my jacket, we went to a airport shuttle stop. We were there only like ten seconds before the shuttle arrived at the stop. My backpack was really heavy because I had my computer, Kate’s computer, my computer’s charger, my clothes, and my pencils and paper. The shuttle drove us to a place where there are trains that go to the airport. We rode one to the airport, and then we went down to the subway. Because my backpack was so heavy, my Mom helped me. When we got to the subway, we sat down and waited for the subway train to move, but it didn’t. So we left the train and went in a different train. Then the train left and the speakers said that Jackson Park was the first stop. Then like fifty minutes the train came to Clinton. We got off there and went to the train station. We got lunch, and then we got Starbucks. I got Chai Tea Latte, because it is my favorite. Then we went to Gate D, and when we got there, Mom saw that we missed our train. Then we went back to the tickets thing, and then we went to the information center. Mom and Dad were talking to the people to see what options we have, and that took about half an hour. My parents came to a decision. We took the voucher, which give us back our money on a check, and we have a year before the ticket expires. Ira and Kate got really sad. When we got back to our car, Dad was looking for hotels while Mom was at the wheel.

Kate:
We woke up and we wanted to ride a train. We went into our car and came to the place when we can eat and the trains are there. Then we missed our train, so me and Ira were very sad because we missed our train and then we went to the hotel.

Railroad station is beautiful in Chicago

Part 9 here

Part 7 here OK, today is the day when we will ride the train to San Francisco.
