Intrigued, we decided to stop and learned that McCarfy Observatory was located here. They placed a scaled Solar System in the public properties of New Milford. The yellow, 6 foot in diameter ball represents Sun. Here is the map with locations of other objects, let’s try to find them? Just in case if we are lost, in public library they provided more precise coordinates of each objects. First four (Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars) are located near the Sun, so we found them pretty easily. For others we need to know the city well, so better to visit the library.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4812\" src=\"https:\/\/oureveryday.life\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/DAD_6620.jpg\" alt=\"DAD_6620\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oureveryday.life\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/DAD_6620.jpg 600w, https:\/\/oureveryday.life\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/DAD_6620-300x450.jpg 300w, https:\/\/oureveryday.life\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/DAD_6620-16x24.jpg 16w, https:\/\/oureveryday.life\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/DAD_6620-24x36.jpg 24w, https:\/\/oureveryday.life\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/DAD_6620-32x48.jpg 32w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4811\" src=\"https:\/\/oureveryday.life\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/DAD_6626.jpg\" alt=\"DAD_6626\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oureveryday.life\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/DAD_6626.jpg 600w, https:\/\/oureveryday.life\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/DAD_6626-300x450.jpg 300w, https:\/\/oureveryday.life\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/DAD_6626-16x24.jpg 16w, https:\/\/oureveryday.life\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/DAD_6626-24x36.jpg 24w, https:\/\/oureveryday.life\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/DAD_6626-32x48.jpg 32w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n
Here are some facts about each planet.
\nMercury. The vast region beyond Neptune has a structure that has been slowly defined in the past 60 years. It consists of an inner comet belt called the Kuiper Belt and beyond that a region called the Oort cloud, with a belt of comets then a giant spherical “cloud” of comets.
\nKuiper Belt named after Gerard Kuiper who first described the large belt of comets orbiting beyond Jupiter in the plane of the Solar System. It extends from the region of Neptune to several thousands times earth’s distance from the sun. It contains millions of comets. These are ancient relics that formed over four billion years ago, and is where most comets that are seen from Earth come from.
\nThe Oort cloud named after Dutch astronomer Jan van Oort, who theorized that the extremities of the Solar System house an enormous “cloud” of comets that orbit in a sphere that encircles the Solar System. It extends beyond the Kuiper Belt outward to possibly about 100,000 times the distance from Earth to the Sun, about halfway to the nearest star.
