After the fall season is over, we start to learn our final piece, the State routine. This routine is four to five minutes long, and since we are in the Show division, we get to dance with props, and a floor we have to unfold and fold back up. This year Stephanie was very ambitious, and we had two floors. One of them was black, and the other one was galaxy. We wanted the floor reveal to be a surprise, so most of the dance was done on the black floor, with the galaxy one folded in half in the middle. The underside of the galaxy floor was also black, so it was hidden from view until we unfolded it. Our props included a big blue dot with lights and scarves, and four ‘black holes’, which were just black door frames with curtains draped over them.<\/p>\n

We learned our State routine slowly, and we only showed parts of it during the competitions before State. The first one we went to was Parkrose, and we showed just two minutes of the whole dance. We only had the bottom black floor, different costumes, and no black holes. However, we did very well, and placed third in the Show division.<\/p>\n

The next competition we went to was Liberty. Stephanie also decided to paint out hair blue along with our foreheads. There’s only two gingers on our team, and everyone else has dark hair. The blue blended really well with the darker hair, while Jenna and I needed an extra coat to make it look like the blue was merging with\u00a0 our hair. We joked that our heads were now portals from the game series Portal, and also that we looked like Yondu from Guardians of the Galaxy. It was a really fun time, but the hairspray took forever to wash out afterwards:)<\/p>\n

This time we showed our dance all the way up to the floor reveal. It was incredibly stressful, because we’d only learned part of the dance three days before performing it, so we were a lot less confident with the choreography. The judges noticed this, and pointed it out. Right before we opened up our galaxy floor, one of the judges said: “Why are your girls spread out so far? It makes your team seem small, and there are only eight of them, you should move them closer to the center to – never mind…” She saw that we were spread thin to be able to open the floor, and disregarded her previous remark:)<\/p>\n

We didn’t do so good this time, but it was still really fun.<\/p>\n

The week before State, we performed our full routine at a school assembly, and at the Glencoe Exhibition.<\/p>\n

I was running on a lot of adrenaline, and I pushed too hard in this jump and pulled something in my back. But it looks really cool.\"\"<\/p>\n

And finally, the time has come: State. We got to miss school to go to the competition because it’s all day Thursday. We left the school at 6:30 am, and only came back at midnight. We spent all day at the Memorial Coliseum, dancing, stressing about dancing, dancing some more, eating, and stressing about dancing again. As we stood in the wings, right before performing, we got into a circle and the captains said some really motivational and emotional things. I was panicking, and as we unfolded our floors and set up, I noticed that Taylor was crying. And then the dam broke and my own tears started, and would not stop. It helped though, it made my dancing even more passionate and emotion-filled, it made my facial expressions, which were supposed to be sad, that much more genuine. I messed up in the dance, and we didn’t pull out part of the floor entirely, but overall it was an amazing performance. Mom says she gets chills every times she watches the video again.<\/p>\n

I ran off stage with Elie, both of us still crying, and as soon as we were out of sight, I collapsed into her, sobbing. She told me later that the team behind us was staring at us weirdly. When the music ended, we ran back out to help with the floor and the props, but when I got back off the floor and into the wings, the tears came back and I once again fell into someone and cried. This time it was Machesney, and she helped me calm down enough to be able to walk back to the room. An hour or two later we went back out on stage with all the other teams to do the Grand Finale dance. After that was the awards ceremony, where Jenna won a scholarship:), and then we finally got to go home.<\/p>\n

During the bus ride home, Jenna, Laura and I had so much fun. We laughed about the weirdest things, such as fish with legs, and Jenna and I planned to escape after school the next day to get milkshakes. The competition was extremely fun, even though we once again didn’t make it to second round.<\/p>\n
