Sabbatical 2016. Extraterrestial Highway

Part 41 here
After about two hours of driving from Las Vegas to the north, we noticed the Extraterrestial Highway sign. Before 1996 it was ordinary narrow highway with the boring name Nevada State Route 375. However people told the countless stories about UFOs seen in that area. Of course, everything can be easily explained by the nearby presence of the Nellis Air Force Base. The top secret missiles, planes and weapons are tested here since 1950s. But rumor has it that the secret zone Area 51 exists at that base.

In 1989 the engineer Bob Lazar claimed that he had worked with alien spaceships in the hangar of Area 51. That was shown on national television and UFO hunters started to come here from all over the country. That was the reason why state officials made a decision to change the boring highway name to the Extraterestial Highway.DAD_0237 DAD_0245

We visited Alien Research Center, after that went to the cafe, at it’s entrance door there was a little alien who welcomes earthlings – I mean, us. We ordered alien burgers, pretty yummy I would say. Also we visited a mailbox where a letter to the aliens can be left. Oh, and keep that in secret, please – we even saw one of the aliens!DAD_0241

In the early evening we were driving by the International Car Forest of the last Church. It’s history began when the artist Chad Sorg drove through Goldfield and noticed a car that was standing vertically with it’s front buried in the sand. He was amused and met with local artist Mark Rippie. By the 2011 Sorg moved to Goldfield to help Rippie with his project.DAD_0269 DAD_0270 DAD_0273 DAD_0275 DAD_0276

At the current time the Forest contains more then 40 cars of different sizes, there are trucks and buses as well. Each car is decorated with graffiti. Unfortunately, the project is not developed anymore, after Sorg and Rippie had an arguement with one of the parties.DAD_0281 DAD_0283 DAD_0285 DAD_0286 DAD_0289 DAD_0291
