We were lucky enough to be able to see a rare occurrence: a full lunar eclipse when the moon was closest to the Earth (a supermoon), and in our neighborhood it happened right as the moon rose. After arriving at our chosen spot to observe it, we set up our camera equipment and began scanning the dark sky for the moon. At first it was barely visible, because the horizon was partly obscured by smoke. But as it became darker, the moon rose higher, and became much brighter.

We didn’t wait till the very end of the eclipse, since the kids had school the next day, and it was better to get to bed earlier.
